SET-UP

2014
Elora Centre for the Arts – Elora, ON

“Between you and me I feel set-up. Like a punchline to a bad joke. If you are going to tell me something, tell me straight, not with some contrived tip off. You know I always miss the point.”

Set-up features recent works by Kyle Beal. Realized in traditional drawing techniques as well as new media, these works investigate the various relationships of the artist to his studio, and the works to the viewer, creating temporary moments and small fictions that allow for inquiry into how we identify ourselves to ourselves and to those around us. Moving from intimately scaled drawings rendered in largely in charcoal to objects animated with electronics, the works provide various points for access and recognition. Within the ongoing series of what can broadly be described as ‘note drawings’, a few words or a crude doodle become starting points to cook up relationships, tell half baked stories, and serve up small portions of laughter and drama.
